Message from the Circulation Manager

Welcome to the to the Library Circulation Department located in the Miller Information Commons.

You have been hired as a Library Aide and are now a member of the Circulation Desk staff. The Circulation Desk is the initial contact for all patrons — students, faculty, staff, 'neighbors', alumni, and other approved guests. You should be ready to greet and assist all patrons in a professional and courteous manner. When you look up from the desk and show a willingness to help someone as they enter the building, you create an atmosphere that makes our patrons — especially your fellow classmates — feel welcome and comfortable. Go the extra mile to help a patron relying on the skills you have been taught, or when needed, ask for help from an on-duty Circulation Coordinator or a Reference Librarian.

We offer a variety of services in the library and many take place right at the desk. You will be taught the procedures and processes necessary to fulfill your responsibilities as a Library Aide and it is up to you to keep up-to-date on any changes. These changes will be sent to you via email, or are posted on the Homepage of this wiki. Your main responsibilities include checking out and checking in library materials, but you will also become skilled in other areas.

One critical aspect of your job is to keep all patron records confidential. This means you cannot give out personal information for any patron, nor may you share what materials they currently have checked out to their account or have been checked out in the past. A breach of this rule will result in immediate termination.

We value our student workers and are glad you are a part of our team. We look forward to working with you this semester. Please let me know if you have any questions.
