HAVE A GREAT WINTER BREAK!

Spring 2015 Schedules
Schedules for spring 2015 are posted in When I Work until March 6, the day before spring break begins. I will post schedules for the rest of the semester until finals week soon.

UVM Reciprocal Borrowing Machine Down
The machine that we use to swipe UVM IDs for reciprocal borrowing is broken. I am working with someone from UVM to come up with a solution, but in the meantime, if a UVM student comes in, you must call the UVM library at 802-656-2023 and ask to speak with someone in circulation. Tell them that you work at Champlain College Library and that you need to check to see if a student has library privileges. If they give you approval, follow the same process that we normally follow once the student is approved. If you have any questions, talk to a circulation coordinator or Joe.

Library Items' Due Dates
Checked out library items will have a due date of December 15 because the library is closed on the December 13 and 14. This means that patron expiration dates are before the item due dates but it is not a problem.

Finals Week Library Hours
Friday, December 5th (7:30 a.m. - midnight)
Saturday, December 6th (10 a.m. - midnight)
Sunday, December 7th (10 a.m. - midnight)

Weekly Updates 9/8/14 - 9/14/14

Shelf Reading
I will begin scheduling shelf reading this week for library staff. For those of you who have ten hours already scheduled, I may change one of your hours to an hour of shelf reading if the schedule permits. For those with fewer than ten hours, I will contact you about getting an hour of shelf reading at a time that you have available. Not everyone will necessarily get an hour of shelf reading, but I will try to accommodate as many people as possible.

New 15-minute Break Policy
The policy for taking a 15-minute paid break for those people who are working four hour shifts is that you must ask the supervisor on-duty, either a circulation coordinator or me, if you can take your break, but you do not need to write it down. Please see http://2717.wikidot.com/library-aides-paid-unpaid-breaks for the current policy.

Records in Use
If you get a message that a record is "in use by system" and you can't check that item in or out, you can clear the item's current use in Millennium. The way to do that is listed in the wiki notes at http://2717.wikidot.com/what-should-i-do-when-the-message-in-use-by-system-pops-up.

All Floors Now Printing
The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and basement floor computers are now able to print to the printer on each floor. Please let me know if there are any further issues with printing.

Troubleshooting the 1st Floor Printer
When there is a paper jam or other problem with the new printer on the 1st floor, log-in to the system by pressing "1" and then enter. Once you are logged-in, press the "Status/Job Cancel" button to get information about where the jam is and how to fix it. Note: when opening the side door on the printer to access the rollers and fuser, you must close it fairly hard to have it shut all the way. The gray handle will be pointing down so that it flush with the door when it is closed.

I can't thank you enough for making my time in the library and Champlain so memorable. You are all the best group of people and employees any manager could ever hope of working with. I wish you all the best of luck. I will especially miss the employees who have worked with me for years. I regret will not get to know the people who have just started even more. You can reach me on LinkedIn under Tammy (Miller) Poquette.

Lockable Front Desk Drawers & Equipment
Someone made me aware that the bottom drawer with portable DVD players does not lock very well. I moved the DVD players to the 2nd to the last drawer. I put the headphones in the bottom drawer. The second drawer is now empty. We can decide if we want to leave it empty or put other supplies. Let me know if this new arrangement does not work. Thanks, Tammy

SGA Phone and Tablet Charging Station
The charging station has been moved to MIC101, the tower room. There is a small shelf at the bottom of the sign where they can place their device. It is located next to the KCup machine.

No shelf-reading the week of October 14th. You can do a project instead of shelf-reading, if you want to work during your hour.

Godbox Exhibit
There is an art exhibit the library will be hosting for the month of October. If you see a large table with martini glasses and digital bugs on it in the corner across from Andy's Office (room 106), it's the product of Chris Thompson an MFA grad, adjunct professor, and artist. The exhibit, godbox, deals with questions about free will, brain science, and art. Some of these concepts are being discussed in our Core 110 classes Concepts of the Self. The godbox provides an interactive teachable art exhibit. The description is on the wall next to the exhibit. Feel free to play and interact with the exhibit before or after your shift.

Signage
You may start noticing new signage around the building. These are temporary paper signs. We are trying the wording and placement of the signs to direct people to all the great things in the building (i.e. printers, restrooms, elevators, classrooms & labs, lab monitor station, scanning station and others places). Please let me know if you finding that students are either complaining they do not understand the signs, or are very happy to see them.

KleenGuard Masks at the Front Desk
There has been concern about people spreading illnesses to others. We have masks to hand out to anyone who does not want to catch anything from a person who appears sick, or who is coughing. You can also offer a mask to anyone who does not want to spread illness to others. There are more masks in the office, if you need them.

Hand Dryers in the Bathrooms
Everyone bathroom only has a hand dryer. They removed all the paper towels from the bathrooms. I have stored some paper towels in the bottom drawer of the small gray cabinet in the office. This is in case someone spills something in the building. I have also put the band aides in that drawer as well.
